I think we get so caught up in the weeds of what Scripture specifically says about this or that, that we miss the heart of the matter. God is after our hearts.
Instead of only asking, “Is this technically a sin?” maybe the questions should be: What is my heart posture toward it? What fruit is it producing in my life? Is it leading me toward sin or closer to God? Does it have a hold on me? And if God asked me to lay it down tomorrow to pick up my cross and follow Him, could I?
And that can apply to anything,
Alcohol, weed, food, money, relationships, entertainment, social media…whatever it is.
Jesus took people beyond the surface-level law and addressed the condition of the heart. Murder wasn’t only about the physical act, He addressed anger. Adultery wasn’t only about the physical act, He addressed lust in the heart. His point was that you can technically avoid violating a law outwardly while still having a heart that is contrary to what God desires.
Sometimes we can spend so much time debating the particulars that we miss the deeper question:
What does my relationship with this thing reveal about my relationship with God?
1 Samuel 16:7
But the Lord said unto Samuel, “Look not on his countenance or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him; for the Lord seeth not as man seeth. For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”
